What size jars do you need for dried herbs?

Choose jars from the volume of the herbs you want to keep and the space on your shelf. A jar’s fluid-ounce capacity does not tell you the weight of every herb it can hold. Measure one representative portion before ordering a matching multipack.

Why jar ounces and herb ounces differ

A jar label usually gives a capacity, while a bag of dried herbs may be sold by weight. Those numbers are not interchangeable. Use the volume of your own portion to choose capacity, then check the jar’s outside dimensions against the shelf before ordering.

Two herbs can have different shapes, cuts, and packing behavior. A fluid-ounce capacity describes space inside a vessel; it does not provide a universal weight conversion. Check whether a package lists weight or fluid capacity before comparing the numbers.

Write down the volume of the portion you want to store. Then measure the jar’s outside width, depth, and height.

Measure a portion before choosing a multipack

Measure a representative portion of the same herb and cut you plan to store. Keep the fill loose and record both its mass and volume if you want to scale the estimate. A measurement for one ingredient does not establish the capacity needed for another.

  1. Use the same material and preparation. A whole leaf, coarse cut, and fine cut can occupy space differently.
  2. Fill loosely and record the volume. Do not compress the sample just to make a larger jar appear to fit more.
  3. Keep the measurement with the project notes. If you scale it, show the sample mass and loose-fill volume rather than borrowing a universal conversion.

No measured sample, no weight estimate

The calculator below checks shelf dimensions. To estimate herb volume from weight, measure a loose sample of the same herb first: target volume = target mass × sample volume ÷ sample mass. Use the same mass unit for both weights.

Check the shelf before you order

Compare the jar’s outside width and height with the space you can actually use. Leave the gaps and lid clearance you need, then count how many fit. The worksheet checks a simple row layout; it does not assess the seal, storage life or material suitability.

Enter each measurement in inches or millimeters. The worksheet converts each field to inches before calculating, so a mixed-unit entry is still explicit rather than silently treated as one unit. It checks one straight row of equal-width vessels, then checks depth and height separately.

Illustrative example

This layout is a calculation example, not a product test. A 24-inch usable shelf with 3-inch jars and 0.5-inch gaps fits seven jars in one row. With 3.5-inch jars and the same gap, it fits six.

The outside width controls the row count. The named capacity does not.

Understand what the result does not establish

A mathematical fit tells you whether stated dimensions can share a simple row. It does not tell you whether a vessel seals well, protects from light, suits food storage, or preserves an ingredient. Check those separate questions with the exact container and relevant guidance.

Measure tapered or decorative jars at their widest point, including any projecting closure. A jar that fits across the shelf still needs to pass the depth and lid-clearance checks.
